Study finds strollers and carriers can be dangerous

Pennsylvania parents may be surprised to learn that, on average, two children are injured by strollers or child carriers every hour in the United States. The study, conducted by researchers at an Ohio hospital, also found that approximately one child per day has to be hospitalized for such injuries.

Researchers analyzed federal government data gathered between 1990 and 2010 to establish the frequency of injuries related to strollers and child carriers. They found that almost 361,000 children aged 5 and under were treated in hospital emergency rooms for stroller and carrier injuries during that period of time, which calculates to around two children per hour. Most of the children suffered traumatic brain injuries, which can negatively impact a child's cognitive development. Sixty-seven percent of stroller injuries and 63 percent of carrier injuries were caused by falls. Tripping accounted for 29 percent of carrier injuries and 16 percent of stroller injuries.

Researchers found that 7 percent of carrier injuries were serious enough to require the child's hospitalization, while 2 percent of stroller injuries required the child to be admitted to a hospital. TBIs accounted for at least two-thirds of the hospitalizations. Overall, researchers found that head injuries related to carriers and strollers tripled since 1990. The author of the study says the findings show it is essential for parents and caregivers to buckle children into their strollers and carriers every time. It is also imperative that children are never left unattended while in their strollers or carriers.

Unfortunately, some strollers and carriers injure children because they are poorly designed or constructed. Parents of children injured by faulty products may have grounds to file a products liability lawsuit against the negligent manufacturer. An attorney could review the case and explain all legal options available.
