Over 135 Years of Combined Experience In Personal Injury and Wrongful Death

Medical science improving drug delivery for brain injuries

Every year, about 2.5 million traumatic brain injuries happen in the United States. Recent technological advances in brain injury therapies have produced promising results that might eventually help people in Pennsylvania who experience a damaging blow to the head. Although the initial brain damage cannot be repaired, the secondary problems that arise, such as inflammation and continued cell death, can be reduced with pharmaceuticals. Researchers are conducting preclinical tests of over 100 drugs.

Injecting drugs into brain tissue presents numerous risks, but researchers have designed a compound that could be given intravenously. The compound would then attach to the injured brain tissues because sugar-coated proteins known as chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans form around a brain injury site. A peptide sequence of four amino acids within the experimental compound bind to these proteins and carry them to them to the site of the injury. A professor at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute said this method would deliver targeted treatment that could limit damage.

Because this peptide sequence of cysteine, alanine, glutamine and lysine naturally adheres to brain injuries, the professor added that it could also be used to find brain damage. Compounds that are used with imaging equipment could include the peptide sequence and reveal injuries.

A person coping with a brain injury might experience memory loss and other difficulties that interfere with daily activities. When the injury has resulted from the negligence of another party, such as in a motor vehicle collision caused by a driver who was speeding, distracted or impaired, a personal injury attorney could be of assistance in seeking compensation for the losses that the injured victim has sustained.
