Major recalls for chicken producer

A recall of more than 4.5 million pounds of chicken products might affect many Pennsylvania residents as Pilgrim's Pride Corp. is a large provider of fully cooked chicken meals, and one in five chickens in America reportedly come from the company. The chicken is being recalled for containing non-food materials like plastic and metal.

Three brands called Sweet Georgia Brand, Gold Kist Farms and Pierce Chicken are involved in the recall, which includes more than 20 products. The corporate website noted that Pilgrim's Pride processes more than 7 billion pounds of live chicken every year and more than 34 million chickens weekly. The company has made no mention of the recall on its website, and a Brazilian company called JBS S.A. could also face consequences from the recall as it is the world's biggest protein company and a shareholder that owns 75.5 percent of Pilgrim's Pride common stock.

The company faced the same problem earlier in April when more than 40,000 pounds of chicken nuggets purchased by schools were also contaminated with other materials, and the company issued a recall on April 7 after alerting the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service to consumer complaints on April 6. There have been no confirmed cases of negative reactions from consuming these chicken products.

Consumers are entitled to believe that the goods they purchase are safe, and a manufacturer, distributor or retailer could be financially responsible when harm results because of a defective product. An attorney who has product liability litigation experience can often be of assistance to victims in seeking compensation from the responsible party or parties.
