Over 135 Years of Combined Experience In Personal Injury and Wrongful Death

Injury to the brain may be predicted in older individuals

As some Pennsylvania residents may know, traumatic brain injuries are often the result of falls. One study has advised doctors to help prevent a TBI by assessing the risk for older individuals. The study was published in a major medical journal.

After looking at the incidence of TBI in elderly individuals, the study concluded that geriatric patients are likely to have a greater propensity for accidents leading to a TBI. The study was made up of 4,004 individuals 65 or older. A history of dementia was not present in any of the study participants. In addition, no one had incurred a TBI when the study started. Participants were evaluated each two years, and this was continued for about 7.5 years.

At subsequent visits, the participants were queried about such conditions as depression, their health state, whether or not they used alcohol and their activity level. The individuals were also asked if they suffered an injury that caused them to lose consciousness. Participants were tested to see if they could care for themselves and their ability to think clearly was present. This included tasks such as feeding themselves, bathing and doing other physical tasks.

At the end of the study, researchers concluded that those with depression and vascular disease as well as those having at least two chronic diseases were more likely to suffer a TBI. Those with the inability to handle the tasks of daily living were more prone to TBI. Those with alcohol use, decreased cognitive function or a sedentary life were not more at risk.

Brain injuries can change the lives of their victims, regardless of age. The TBI victims may need a lifetime of medical care and treatment, and in some cases are unable to obtain gainful employment. When such an injury has been caused by the negligence of another party, the victim may want legal assistance in seeking appropriate compensation.
