1 killed, 1 critical after car turning left hits their motorcycle

Though it happens thousands of times a day, left-hand turns are among the most dangerous situations on the roads of Pittsburgh. The motorist trying to turn must pay close attention to oncoming vehicles to determine when it is safe to proceed. An inattentive or impatient driver can cause a serious wreck by turning as other motorists are still passing through the intersection.

This is especially true when the passing person is riding a motorcycle. In fact, the danger of nearly any type of motor vehicle crash gets magnified when a motorcycle is involved.

A recent tragedy on a Pennsylvania road illustrates what can happen. A woman was killed and her companion critically hurt when a teenager drove his car into their motorcycle in late September.

WCAU-TV reports that the two were riding southbound as they approached the car, which apparently was facing the other direction, waiting to turn. For some reason, the driver, 19, turned into the bike, sending both riders flying.

Though emergency responders rushed the pair to the hospital, the woman died early the next morning. The man was still alive as Sept. 24, but his current condition is not clear. It is also not known what relationship the two riders had.

The crash occurred around 9 p.m., so it is possible that darkness played a role. Of course, no driver automatically gets off the hook simply by claiming it was “too dark” to see the victim. Darkness requires drivers to take extra care, by using headlights and making extra sure of their surroundings.
