Over 135 Years of Combined Experience In Personal Injury and Wrongful Death

What are common reasons for fatal car accidents?

Statistically, very few trips in a car, truck or motorcycle end in an auto accident. And many car accidents cause minor injuries or no injury.

But being on the road does present risk of serious harm in a wreck. No matter how careful we are, other motorists may not take their duty of due care as seriously. All it takes for someone to miss a stop sign or lose control on a highway curve for tragedy to happen.

What are the most dangerous things on the road? According to the National Safety Council, they are:

  • Impaired driving. In 2012, an estimated 10,322 people were killed in car accidents involving a drunk driver. Another 3,952 died in crashes involving drug use.
  • Speeding. Each day, an average of 28 people die in accidents caused by a speeding driver. That is about 10,219 victims per year.
  • Elderly drivers. The NSC reports that the risk of many kinds of accidents, such as with bicyclists and pedestrians, go up when drivers are older than 75.
  • Lack of safety precautions. Most passengers killed in accidents in 2012 were not wearing their seat belts.

Thought the NSC does not mention it, distracted driving is also a big danger to human life. But whatever the reason a negligent driver smashes into your vehicle is not important as you recover from you injuries. The important thing is that he or she pays his or her faire share of your damages, such as hospital bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
